There’s something about animal crackers that even adult enjoy. I’m not a big sweets-eater, but I could eat animal crackers all day. Yum yum!
However, for gluten-free eaters, say goodbye to this versatile snack. No more are they the perfect fighter of afternoon hunger, the perfect car-ride snack, or the perfect “cookie” for a child. They’re made with wheat after all, so they are contaminated with gluten.
Recently, I was able to get my hands on some allergy-free animal crackers, and let me tell you, they’ve brought great happiness to this cook and someday mother.

Appearance
Pros: I’m not picky about appearance when it comes to animal crackers. After all, the back half of a camel tastes as good as the whole thing, and the left leg of a zebra is just as tasty as the complete cracker. However, I was happy with the fact that Jo-Sef stuck with the shapes of animals. It’s a great way for gluten-free kids to feel “normal” and to enjoy the traditional snacks we all did growing up.
Cons: No cons here! 🙂
Taste
Pros: I love that these allergy-free “cookies” (as they’re officially called) taste just like animal crackers! I love that they’ve got a little stronger hint of vanilla in them to make them almost useable in a recipe as a vanilla wafer. Versatile and tasty!
Cons: If you’re looking for a traditional non-vanilla tasting animal cracker, look somewhere else. However, I’m sure you’ll be back because nothing I’ve tasted have really reminded me of animal crackers quite like these!
Moisture/Texture
Pros: These cookies are a good balance of moisture and crunchy cracker-ish texture. They’re crunchy enough to qualify as a good snack for a child, yet they won’t leave your child (or you!) running for a glass of water, because they’re so dry. Even without preservatives, I’ve had an open box of these crackers in my pantry for a month now (and not in an air-tight container), and they’re not stale! That’s success!
Cons: At first, upon tasting these crackers/cookies, I felt they were slightly grainy. They’re not really grainy, however, and after a few of the addicting crackers, you’ll forget you even thought that!
What I Love
I love that gluten-free companies are bringing some of the classics to the pantry for gluten-free eaters! I love that if I have a gluten-free child, I will be able to offer him/her a snack that resembles traditional, wheat animal crackers! I love the taste of this product, and I love the possibility of using them as a vanilla wafer. Mmmm..the possibilities!
What I’d Improve
I have to say my one concern with this product is the lack of elephants in their animal shapes….not. I love this product just as they are. 🙂
