Product Reviews: New Planet Gluten-Free Beer

Believe it or not, I’ve had beer in three different countries (S. Africa, Egypt, and the US).   I’ve tasted a sampler to know what I like and don’t like. Surprised?

Please know this. I’m not a big drinker. I’ve tasted some alcoholic beverages and have done so in moderation, as my greatest fear is being drunk. So many people think they’re stronger than they are in this area, but you don’t know how much is too much ’til it’s too late. (My mom always told us that growing up.)

Adam and I were sent a gluten-free beer to sample. Why gluten-free? Beer is fermented with an ingredient called malt extract. Malt contains gluten, thus contaminating all beer products with gluten.  Gluten-free beers can be made from sorghum, rice, or other gluten-free products.

Allergy-Related Information: Gluten-Free

Appearance

Pros: I can’t say their beer looks any different than most bottles of beer. No complaints here.

The beer we tasted was the Off Grid Pale Ale, which I was really planning on enjoying, as I don’t really like dark beers.

Cons: No cons here in regards to appearance. Regarding aroma,  the aroma was wonderful but not strong enough in my opinion. I love the rich smell of a good beer.

Taste

Pros: If you like the taste of beer, then this company will be a pleasant treat for a gluten-free drinker. There was the traditional soft and smooth.

Cons: For being a light ale, there was a heaviness to this ale. The initial taste was smooth and light, but there was a dark taste to it, a heaviness after swallowing, a bitterness that reminded me of a dark ale.

I was also disappointed with the lack of sweetness in the ale. With good beer I’ve had, there’s a hint of sweet – none here. It was a bland, cool drink with a bitter/intense aftertaste. I have to admit I wasn’t really a fan.

In the defense of New Planet, they offer two other kinds of beers (Tread Lightly Ale and 3R Raspberry Ale). Perhaps they’re different and more of a brew I’d enjoy.
