Product Reviews: StarLite Cuisines Taquitos (Take 2)

I have reviewed this company before.  In fact, it was not that long ago.  I have to admit; I wasn’t too thrilled.  However, as I had more product in my freezer, I decided that I needed to give it another shot. I’m really glad I did.

Allergy-Related Information: Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, No GMO, Vegan

Appearance

Pros: When I made the recipe sent to me from StarLite Cuisine, I was really surprised with the result.  The product was not impressive.  When I heated up the individual taquitos for lunch, the appearance was quite different.  They were firm and yet soft to bite through and easily heated up for a quick meal in under 3 minutes.

Cons: I would still say they need more filling.  That I cannot deny.

Taste

Pros: I remember being so disappointed with the taste of these taquitos.  I had prepared the recipe given me by the company and was sad to find that the only flavor I enjoyed was the fresh cilantro on top. My husband was all grimace as he took a mouthful, and I took my time to really analyze them in my eating but found no spice, no strong taste, no flavor to keep me coming for another bite.

However, when I ate these taquitos by themselves, not drown in the recipe’s so-called “sauce”, I was happier with the result.  Sure, they weren’t amazing, but they had more flavor that worked well with any Mexican-style dipping sauce.

Cons: They still needed a dipping sauce.  I liked them with a sour cream and salsa mix, because they were still a little bland for my liking.

Moisture/Texture

Pros: Crunchy yet soft and bendable.  Now, that is a taquito.  Unfortunately, in the recipe, the taquitos were drowned in a broth that turned them to mush.  Eaten by themselves, the texture is great!

Cons: No cons here!

What I Love

I love giving things a second try.  I like making old foods new ways, and I’m glad to say that this product is best eaten as intended.  Avoid the recipes, and you’ll be happy. 🙂

What I’d Improve

Fill those taquitos right up with some meat or some tofu or whatever the contents should be depending on the flavor.  They still need a little more substance to them.

Overall Rating: B
